Guitar Hook

January 26, 2021 by jdviz Leave a Comment

For my birthday, my wife bought me a really nice Dewalt scroll saw. This thing is so nice. As a first project to test it out and make sure I know how to use it, I made the following guitar hook/hanger out of pine and cedar. Works great and is a bit more attractive than the one’s you can buy.

Tobacco Pipe

January 26, 2021 by jdviz Leave a Comment

In the summer of 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, my stepson and his girlfriend came to stay with us for a couple of weeks. While with us, I taught him how to use the lathe and hand tools to make the following tobacco pipe. I had some Algerian briar waiting just for this project. As you can see below, the burl is beautiful. The stem is not acrylic, as I didn’t have any, so we made it out of a black plywood pen blank that I also had on hand.

On the whole, it turned out to be a remarkable piece that smokes smooth and clean.

Coffee Table

January 26, 2021 by jdviz Leave a Comment

Here’s a coffee table I designed and taught our daughter and her fiance how to make as an engagement gift. She found some different designs online, so I took those pics and designed this one based on them.

I had a lot of fun helping them to build this, and I think they had fun building it with me. They discovered that wood working is 99% sanding HAHAHAHA!

It’s made out of some flat sawn white oak with some steel legs we found on Etsy. The results below speak for themselves.

Kids Kitchen Stool

January 26, 2021 by jdviz Leave a Comment

Once my wood shop got to a point where I could effectively build most anything, I posted that fact on my Facebook. Then my niece saw that and requested this stool for her kids.  She sent me a link to a stool designed by The Wood Whisperer that others that some of her friends had already. Once again, I was more than happy to have a project.

I chose to build it out of red oak that was readily available in our local hardware box store. I also made it so that it could break down flat.

By all accounts, it has happily worked out very well for them!

Pen Turning

January 26, 2021 by jdviz Leave a Comment

I found a great deal on a used Rikon lathe. I say used, but when I picked it up, the box had never been opened. Turned out to be one of the best purchases I’ve made. I’ve made bowls, dowels, spindles, pizza cutter handles, pipes, and pens. If you love working with wood, then having a quality lathe is a true joy.

Here are a few of the pens I’ve made. In this pic, the blue and light orange pens are from colored plywood blanks. The center bright orange pen is made from acrylic.

The following pens are made from orange padauk and purple heart hardwoods.
